There’s something about hitting the halfway point of a slow sales year that makes you want to burn everything down and start fresh, right? But instead of spiralling, during this mid-year business review, I’m pausing. I’ve been running my small candle business long enough to know that constant hustle isn’t the vibe. This mid-year moment? It’s for resetting, realigning, and getting intentional about how I want the rest of the year to feel.
Here’s how I’m shifting gears and making smarter, softer decisions that actually support my growth and my sanity for those ✨Soft CEO Vibes✨
1. I’m Slowing Down
We all feel it, the capitalist pressure to constantly do more is so real. Especially when sales are down and things are slow. It’s tempting to fill that space with action and thoughts of “I clearly need to do more!”
But this year, I’m learning that slowing down doesn’t mean missing out. It means moving with intention instead of anxiety. What this looks like for me:
Saying no to markets that don’t align
When I started this farmers market season, I was ready to do three markets a week like I did last year. The money was great, so I was pumped to do it again. Well, that’s not how it’s working out because sales are down for me by almost 50% compared to last year. Due to the economy, people want to save money. I started to realize that some of these markets weren’t worth my time when I factored in my earnings vs. the cost of goods + gas booth fee + my time. So I made the tough decision to let one go! And you know what? I’m happy I did it! Busy schedule + low sales = burnout. I’m not willing to be burned out for nothing!
Prioritizing rest
In 2025, rest should not be treated as a treat for getting things done. Rest is what allows you to get stuff done! It helps your body recover, it helps you process information, and it creates space for creativity. Here are some ways I’m prioritizing rest:
- Creating a solid bedtime routine– Shower, skincare, brush teeth, no screentime, red lights, and a book or journal.
- No working after 5 pm– I work for myself full-time, and I know time is not a luxury everyone has, so if you’re working on your business after your job, your hours will be different.
- Walking in silence- We’re processing information all day long; your brain needs a break, girl! Going on those hot girl walks for your mental health is great, but did you know that listening to podcasts while you walk might be making you feel more tired mentally? It’s making your brain process even MORE information, which is kind of defeating the purpose. Try walking in silence, with just your thoughts (scary, I know lol). For me, walking is the time to be present, enjoy the scenery around me.
2. I’m Only Showing Up On Platforms Where I Feel Good
Gone are the days of chasing every algorithm and forcing myself to show up on platforms that make me feel icky and drained. This season is about joyful marketing, leaning into the places where connection feels natural and fun.
What’s working for me right now:
- Email marketing- This is where my customers already are! I can send out one quick email and reach hundreds of people. If you’re not sure where to start, I wrote a beginner-friendly guide right here.
- Facebook- Honestly, before I started my business, I never used Facebook. Apparently, that’s where small-town Iowa likes to hang out. Whatever gets posted to Facebook, I also post on Instagram because they’re connected. I don’t love these platforms, so I don’t put too much effort into them.
- Threads- for casual, unfiltered vibes.
- YouTube– for storytelling and value-packed content
If it’s draining me, it’s not worth it. My business deserves a version of me that’s energized, not resentful.
3. I’m Rethinking Products That Don’t Sell
Just because I can make something doesn’t mean that I should. This mid-year review had me looking at my inventory with fresh eyes, and some of it just isn’t worth the shelf space & time.
What’s getting re-evaluated:
- Mini tins (adorable, but not profitable solo)
- Seasonal scents that linger too long
- Products that take too much time for too little return
Every product needs to earn its keep. I’m focusing on what my customers love and what I love making because that’s the sweet spot.
4. I’m Looking Into What I Might Be Missing
Sometimes the biggest shifts come from simply getting curious.
I’ve been asking myself:
- Is there a better way to do this?
- Is there something I haven’t tried yet?
- What’s really draining me and what would feel better?
From pricing to packaging to product ideas, I’m questioning the stuff I used to do on autopilot. I don’t want to coast, I want to evolve and grow!
5. I’m Getting Strategic About Inventory
Overstocked shelves with seasonal scents? Been there. Having to discount said seasonal scents that should’ve sold out but didn’t? Done that. This year, I’m planning smaller, smarter batches and it already feels like a breath of fresh air.
The goal:
Make just enough and sell out. If something sells out early in the season, I’ll restock with a half batch instead of a full one. It’s saving me space, money, and post-season clearance stress. So far, this has cut down on SO MUCH leftover stock and kept me from needing to have a sale to clear my shelves.
💡Bestie tip: If people think you’re going to have a sale, they’ll wait to buy in the sale. Making smaller batches trains people to buy while they can, which means paying full price, and that’s great for your pockets.
Final Thoughts
I’m not blowing up my business. I’m realigning it. This mid-year reset isn’t about doing more, it’s about doing what makes sense, what feels good, and what actually works.
If you’ve been feeling stuck, tired, or scattered, this is your reminder:
You’re allowed to change your mind. You’re allowed to evolve. You don’t need to wait for January to start fresh. You can reset right now.
